Help A Loved One (HALO)

There are few things in life as painful as seeing someone you care about self-destruct with alcohol or drugs and refuse treatment. The HALO program is about getting that someone help with their problem behaviors.  Individualized methods are taught to you to help move them into more self-directed action for their problems. Every day it seems that I get some of the following questions from significant others (SO);

  •   What can I you do to get my son, husband, parent, or close friend to stop drinking or using drugs?

  • They say they have it under control but they keep relapsing into the old behavior.

  • Can they really learn to just cut back or do they have to stop forever?

  •  I know they have to do it themselves, but can’t I do something to help?

  •  They have been in treatment before but it just didn't take, and they tell me that the 12-step method is not right for them.

  • Every time I bring up the topic it goes nowhere AND we get into an argument.

  • Regardless of what some people suggest, I can't just "kick them our" and turn my back on them.

The HALO program can help you:

  • To recognize and safely respond to any potential for violence as changes are introduced at home

  • Learn what triggers them to use alcohol or drugs

  • What to say and do, to support non-using, pro-social behaviors and treatment entry

  • How to improve communication with the substance user

  • Learn how to keep your sanity while the someone is making you feel insane

  • How to effectively use positive and negative reinforcement such that it discourages a loved one's harmful alcohol or other using behavior

  • Learn methods for decreasing stress in general and how to take care of yourself and your own life

  • Learn how to detach without anger and fearing that this will lead to increased drug use or in some cases suicide

  • Learn how to deal with threats of suicide

  • Learn what to tell family and friends

  • Learn the most effective ways to suggest treatment to the substance user, and helping to identify the most appropriate times.

  • Learn what treatment options are available and how well they work and for whom do they work.

  • Learn about moderation approaches

  • Learn how to respond correctly to relapses and dead end attempt at recovery
