My Treatment Philosophy

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day... Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime!

I contract with a limited number of clients who want to change.

I work as a "Make for Change Coach"

I try what has worked for others, and if that doesn't work, we try harder and look for new things and try them out. I am not a believer that one method will work for everyone and I am not inflexibly committed to any particular techniques or theory. What works, works.

Looking back over the past 21 years in my private practice, approximately:

10% of my clients successfully complete all components of treatment.
30% of my clients make substantial change in the primary and secondary problem areas.
50% of my clients make substantial changes and feel substantially better but quit maintaining contact between us before I believe they should.
75% of my of my inquiries quit treatment too soon.
70% of the people who contact me have a one-time-only "Treatment Assessment and Planning Consultation" - face to face or tele-consultation.
5% are discharged by me for lack of motivation or other reasons.

Over all, the vast majority of people who have come to me have sustained a substantial change or significant improvement - for at least six months. Unfortunately, I haven't done formal longer term follow-ups and therefore I can't make any additional claims. However, I do get some very nice letters from old clients once in a while.

I believe giving up a destructive habit can be accomplished successfully in two ways -- one way is by substituting an alternative dependency. The second way is by learning how to rely on one's own inner skills. Only by having the skills within yourself can you have true self-confidence. Depending on something outside of yourself, even if it is a non-destructive dependency, can only lead to a lifetime of fears, self-doubt and insecurities.

People can learn to have confidence in their own abilities ...to trust their own judgment and to trust that they will consistently act in their own best interests. I believe that only people who learn how to manage their lives are empowered to enjoy the responsibility of their own existence. So...Take Control, Now !
